{"id":74,"date":"2008-01-02T22:03:51","date_gmt":"2008-01-03T02:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2008\/01\/02\/naked-dsl-just-give-me-a-big-fat-naked-ip-pipe-please\/"},"modified":"2019-12-27T08:54:36","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T08:54:36","slug":"naked-dsl-just-give-me-a-big-fat-naked-ip-pipe-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/naked-dsl-just-give-me-a-big-fat-naked-ip-pipe-please\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Naked DSL&#8221; &#8212; just give me a big fat, naked IP pipe, please"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been several reports of AT&amp;T&#8217;s &#8220;naked DSL&#8221; offering (i.e. DSL without the analog phone line), which apparently was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dslreports.com\/shownews\/20-ATT-Naked-DSL-Arrives-90592\">condition to merge with BellSouth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who understands IP technology knows where this ends:\u00a0\u00a0 we&#8217;ll just have fat IP pipes (DSL, fiber, cable modem &#8212; doesn&#8217;t matter).\u00a0 The latency will be low enough for real-time services, and the bandwidth will be high enough for video streaming.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re <strong>almost<\/strong> there.<\/p>\n<p>I was setting up our vacation home last year: \u00a0 we&#8217;ve got fast broadband, who needs &#8220;digital cable&#8221;, a &#8220;set top box&#8221;, a &#8220;radio&#8221;, or an &#8220;analog phone line&#8221;?\u00a0 We can already download almost all of the audio and video we want to see.<\/p>\n<p>(I did have to give in on the phone; the freeze-alarm out-dial needs to work when the power&#8217;s out.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been several reports of AT&amp;T&#8217;s &#8220;naked DSL&#8221; offering (i.e. DSL without the analog phone line), which apparently was condition to merge with BellSouth.
