{"id":685,"date":"2016-10-08T19:45:09","date_gmt":"2016-10-08T19:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/?p=685"},"modified":"2019-04-21T02:23:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-21T02:23:00","slug":"the-internet-is-ready-for-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/the-internet-is-ready-for-things\/","title":{"rendered":"The Internet is Ready for Things"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not a fan of the term &#8220;Internet of Things&#8221; (IoT), but it is the best way to describe a future where more and more devices are Internet-connected. \u00a0As computation and communication get\u00a0cheaper, more &#8220;dumb&#8221; devices will be &#8220;smart&#8221; and on-line.<\/p>\n<p>With the current hype around IoT, it&#8217;s not surprising that companies and entrepreneurs are pursuing opportunities to &#8220;own&#8221; various aspects of IoT infrastructure. \u00a0I&#8217;ve seen a ton of startup pitches, and several big companies (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xively.com\/\">Xively<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptc.com\/internet-of-things\">PTC<\/a>, etc. ) are pursuing IoT platforms.\u00a0 You antenna system equipment needs regular maintenance, so do not forget to <a href=\"https:\/\/boostpoorsignal.com\/das-monitoring-maintenance\/\">schedule your DAS maintenance appointment<\/a> to make sure everything is functioning properly.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>The infrastructure elements <em>already<\/em> exist, as the Internet is <strong>exceptional<\/strong> at expanding and shifting to accommodate new kids on the block. \u00a0Consider mobile: there was a time when it was a very distinct thing (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binary_Runtime_Environment_for_Wireless\">Qualcomm BREW<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_Application_Protocol\">WAP<\/a>, etc.) and the business folks talked about being &#8220;on deck&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it&#8217;s clear that mobile is an extension of the Web. \u00a0Mobile HTML is just HTML with a few mobile-specific features. \u00a0 Mobile and desktop browsers share the same core rendering engine. \u00a04G\/LTE is\u00a0a pipe for IP packets. \u00a0Cell phone apps POST JSON payloads over HTTP\/HTTPS just like everyone else.
