{"id":603,"date":"2014-03-05T11:37:03","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T15:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=603"},"modified":"2014-03-05T11:37:03","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T15:37:03","slug":"the-attention-gatekeepers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/the-attention-gatekeepers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Attention Gatekeepers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m seeing interesting cases where\u00a0Facebook, Google or other gorillas tweak content presentation, and then some other company&#8217;s business is directly impacted. \u00a0The gorillas have increasing control (and power) over user attention.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2011\/04\/26\/how-will-demand-media-make-this-work\/\">Demand Media took a huge hit<\/a>\u00a0after Google&#8217;s search engine updates lowered rankings for low-quality content. \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=DMD\">DMD <\/a>is down 80%).<\/p>\n<p>Zynga enjoyed spectacular early success with some of the first social games on Facebook. \u00a0But as game updates clogged feeds, Facebook made presentation changes to improve feed quality, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/07\/25\/net-us-zynga-earnings-idUSBRE86O1NV20120725\">Zynga suffered<\/a>. \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=ZNGA\">ZNGA <\/a>is down 60%). \u00a0Facebook <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/News\/768\/News-Feed-FYI-Helping-You-Find-More-News-to-Talk-About\">continues to tweak<\/a> how feed content is selected and presented.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Google <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424127887323455104579015021688974880\">added a &#8220;Promotions&#8221; tab<\/a> to Gmail, moving most marketing emails out of the main inbox view. \u00a0That <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702303309504579184160007333006\">directly affected Groupon<\/a>, who&#8217;s trying to rely less on the daily coupon. \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q?s=GRPN\">GRPN <\/a>down 20% so far).<\/p>\n<p>And now, Gmail <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itworld.com\/internet\/406120\/gmails-unsubscribe-tool-comes-out-weeds\">added a prominent &#8220;unsubscribe link&#8221;<\/a> to the top of promotional emails, which will impact email marketing performance even more. \u00a0(Unsubscribe is one of many &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/gmailblog.blogspot.com\/2013\/11\/take-even-more-actions-right-from-your.html\">quick action<\/a>&#8221; buttons that Gmail has been rolling out.)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a never-ending battle between those who want user attention, and those who manage it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m seeing interesting cases where\u00a0Facebook, Google or other gorillas tweak content presentation, and then some other company&#8217;s business is directly impacted. \u00a0The gorillas have increasing control (and power) over user attention.
