{"id":49,"date":"2007-11-27T14:35:48","date_gmt":"2007-11-27T18:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2007\/11\/27\/verizon-opening-their-wireless-network\/"},"modified":"2007-11-27T14:35:48","modified_gmt":"2007-11-27T18:35:48","slug":"verizon-opening-their-wireless-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/verizon-opening-their-wireless-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Verizon &#8220;opening&#8221; their wireless network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this is interesting:\u00a0 Verizon has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/news\/2007\/11\/27\/verizon\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">announced that they&#8217;re opening their wireless network<\/a> to outside devices by the end of 2008.\u00a0 Specifically, they will allow activation of any device that meets their to-be-published &#8220;minimum technical standard&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>You may have seen my <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2007\/10\/18\/how-about-network-neutrality-for-wireless-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous rant<\/a> about open and neutral wireless networks. \u00a0 Verizon&#8217;s news certainly seems like a big step in the right direction. \u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope that (a) the technical standards are not onerous, and (b) they offer reasonable wireless plans for non-Verizon devices.<\/p>\n<p>With this news, Apple&#8217;s coming <a href=\"http:\/\/developer.apple.com\/iphone\/devcenter\/\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone SDK<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/code.google.com\/android\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s Android<\/a>, maybe the US still has a chance of making its wireless network infrastructure competitive (e.g. open) with the rest of the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this is interesting:\u00a0 Verizon has announced that they&#8217;re opening their wireless network to outside devices by the end of 2008.\u00a0 Specifically, they will allow activation of any device that meets their to-be-published &#8220;minimum technical standard&#8221;.
