Now, Eric Schmidt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bgr.com\/2011\/09\/03\/googles-schmidt-motorola-buy-is-about-more-than-just-patents\/\">is reported as saying<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe did it for more than just patents, .. The Motorola team has some amazing products.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Of course<\/strong> they did it for more than the patents.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has repeatedly demonstrated what&#8217;s possible with integrated hardware and software design. As computing devices have matured, the old &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wintel\">wintel<\/a>&#8221; model of separating things is just not competitive anymore. \u00a0I have several friends that live on ecosystem boundaries (OS-to-hardware), and it&#8217;s brutal. \u00a0The combinatorics alone (supporting a wide range of vendor hardware configurations with a single OS) are hugely expensive.<\/p>\n<p>My bet is that Google will start integrating product design with Android\/Motorola. \u00a0They&#8217;ll still license to other Android partners, but I&#8217;m betting the most interesting stuff will come first out of Motorola. \u00a0Now the question is: \u00a0do they have the design talent?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Google announced they were buying Motorola, it was widely speculated that they did it &#8220;for the patents&#8221;.
