{"id":307,"date":"2010-12-09T12:41:30","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T16:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=307"},"modified":"2010-12-09T12:41:30","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T16:41:30","slug":"fast-first-drafts-on-the-ipad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/fast-first-drafts-on-the-ipad\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast first drafts on the iPad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My iPad usage has settled down into some regular patterns. \u00a0At home, it&#8217;s cut deeply into laptop time, for quick email checking and as a general purpose reference device.<\/p>\n<p>I got Apple&#8217;s productivity suite (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), but wondered when I&#8217;d ever use them.\u00a0 Beyond short emails, the iPad isn&#8217;t great for content creating.\u00a0 (By the way, Numbers is an excellent spreadsheet browser. Instead of printing out a spreadsheet before a meeting, I load it on my iPad for browsing and &#8220;what ifs&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>But one content creation scenario has emerged for me:\u00a0 writing first drafts.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always had the best results when I <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2009\/04\/23\/the-writing-process-that-works-for-me\/\">write the first draft as quickly as I can<\/a>, then gradually edit and iterate it into a final result.\u00a0 I&#8217;m finding the iPad is a good tool for this (with an external Bluetooth keyboard).\u00a0 I use Pages:\u00a0 formatting is a pain and cut-paste editing is a little unwieldy, which forces me to focus on just the text.\u00a0 There are no other apps on the screen to distract me.<\/p>\n<p>When the draft is done, I just email it to myself and finish it in Word.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My iPad usage has settled down into some regular patterns. \u00a0At home, it&#8217;s cut deeply into laptop time, for quick email checking and as a general purpose reference device.
