{"id":299,"date":"2010-11-08T12:55:42","date_gmt":"2010-11-08T16:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=299"},"modified":"2010-11-08T12:55:42","modified_gmt":"2010-11-08T16:55:42","slug":"disrupting-education-khan-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/disrupting-education-khan-academy\/","title":{"rendered":"Disrupting Education:  Khan Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think Salman Khan is onto something with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/\">Khan Academy<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been wondering when we&#8217;d see Internet-style disruption coming to\u00a0education, and this might be it.<\/p>\n<p>Sal&#8217;s found a way to leverage the power of the Internet. \u00a0He&#8217;s a great teacher, and his videos package up that teaching ability, for anyone, anywhere to use, at virtually no cost. \u00a0For a system that&#8217;s depended on teachers being physically present with their students, this is a way to take our best teachers and make them available to everyone. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think this will fully replace a face-to-face education (and it shouldn&#8217;t), but it can surely augment it.<\/p>\n<p>Also, he&#8217;s using video very well. \u00a0Instead of a talking head or a lecture podium shot with fuzzy slides, we see what&#8217;s most important &#8212; the shared &#8220;paper&#8221;. \u00a0 Also, he&#8217;s kept the videos <strong>short<\/strong>, and single-topic. \u00a0Too many people are still using traditional\u00a0video production principles (e.g. long segments, talking heads), and Sal&#8217;s showing us a much more effective way.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I wish <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Feynman\">Richard Feynmen<\/a> had been able to do this before he died.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think Salman Khan is onto something with Khan Academy. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been wondering when we&#8217;d see Internet-style disruption coming to\u00a0education, and this might be it.
