{"id":278,"date":"2010-06-08T21:48:15","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T01:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=278"},"modified":"2010-06-08T21:48:15","modified_gmt":"2010-06-09T01:48:15","slug":"emotional-vs-rational-thinking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/emotional-vs-rational-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Emotional vs Rational Thinking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re all emotional creatures, and even though business is business, it&#8217;s impossible not to bring emotions into the work we do. \u00a0The key is to recognize when emotions are overriding your rational thinking about a business issue.<\/p>\n<p>If you (or your boss, peer, investor, co-founder, or negotiating counter-part) is &#8220;hung up&#8221; on something, that&#8217;s a big clue that there&#8217;s probably some emotions at play.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">Some examples of emotional issues I&#8217;ve seen in startups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">New employee B shouldn&#8217;t have more stock than employee A, who started much earlier (or more stock than a co-founder)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">The first venture investor doesn&#8217;t want to pay more per share than the initial angel investors.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An entrepreneur doesn&#8217;t want to give up &#8220;control&#8221;, even when involving new investors and managers will greatly increase the chances of success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>An investor doesn&#8217;t want founders or managers to cash out (even partially) before they do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Identifying an issue as an &#8220;emotional issue&#8221; can go a long way to resolving it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re all emotional creatures, and even though business is business, it&#8217;s impossible not to bring emotions into the work we do. \u00a0The key is to recognize when emotions are overriding your rational thinking about a business issue.
