{"id":233,"date":"2009-05-30T08:29:20","date_gmt":"2009-05-30T12:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=233"},"modified":"2009-05-30T08:29:20","modified_gmt":"2009-05-30T12:29:20","slug":"hulu-boxee-temporary-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/hulu-boxee-temporary-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Hulu Desktop &#038; Boxee:  Temporary Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/labs\/hulu-desktop\">Hulu Desktop<\/a> just came out:\u00a0 it&#8217;s a client-app (Mac and Windows) that provides a &#8220;lean back&#8221; UI for Hulu video content.\u00a0 It integrates remote control inputs, so it works well for folks plugging computers into the living room TV.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2009\/05\/11\/browser-powered-television\/\">written before<\/a> about the evolution of Internet TV:\u00a0 Hulu Desktop and Boxee, as client apps, are just temporary, intermediate points.\u00a0 There are few reasons (soon, no reasons) why these UIs can&#8217;t be provided through existing browser technologies, with no client install.<\/p>\n<p>We saw this movie with Web browsers in the mid-90s.\u00a0 As the Web took off, many groups talked themselves into a need to &#8220;control the client&#8221; by having their own Web browser.\u00a0 In some cases, there were good technical reasons:\u00a0 browsers were pretty limited, and adding small capabilities could enable big things.\u00a0 In many cases, it was just flawed strategic thinking.<\/p>\n<p>The Web became part of the operating system (or even has become the OS iteslf) and with increased capabilities, subsumed a lot of apps that would otherwise be client-deployed.\u00a0 These client-side TV apps feel like the last vestige of stuff to get absorbed into the browser.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hulu Desktop just came out:\u00a0 it&#8217;s a client-app (Mac and Windows) that provides a &#8220;lean back&#8221; UI for Hulu video content.\u00a0 It integrates remote control inputs, so it works well for folks plugging computers into the living room TV.
