{"id":179,"date":"2009-04-06T17:05:51","date_gmt":"2009-04-06T21:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=179"},"modified":"2009-04-06T17:05:51","modified_gmt":"2009-04-06T21:05:51","slug":"senior-folks-looking-for-startup-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/senior-folks-looking-for-startup-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior Folks Looking for Startup Jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the recession, inbound requests for &#8220;networking&#8221; have gone up quite a bit.\u00a0 (If I&#8217;ve been hard to reach, I apologize:\u00a0 networking time demands currently exceed supply).<\/p>\n<p>I frequently get pings from senior folks, some hoping to find an opportunity at an early stage startup.\u00a0 In many cases, the qualifying question is:\u00a0 <em>how long can you afford to work with no salary? <\/em> Here&#8217;s why that&#8217;s key.<\/p>\n<p>For many software technology projects, the initial costs are all salaries (especially these days).\u00a0 More and more, entrepreneurs are scrapping it out and coming to the first investors with a prototype or beta, in some cases with initial market uptake.\u00a0 By the time of first funding, the key roles are usually already covered by that founding team, especially for product or technology positions.\u00a0 (Sales\/marketing positions are one exception:\u00a0 that leadership may come on board later, as the company grows).<\/p>\n<p>In other words, senior folks looking for paid positions at early stage startups may find the train&#8217;s already left for key roles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the recession, inbound requests for &#8220;networking&#8221; have gone up quite a bit.\u00a0 (If I&#8217;ve been hard to reach, I apologize:\u00a0 networking time demands currently exceed supply).
