{"id":147,"date":"2009-02-05T22:35:27","date_gmt":"2009-02-06T02:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/?p=147"},"modified":"2009-02-05T22:35:27","modified_gmt":"2009-02-06T02:35:27","slug":"app-stores-for-mac-and-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/app-stores-for-mac-and-windows\/","title":{"rendered":"App Stores for Mac and Windows?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>David Pogue\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/05\/technology\/personaltech\/05pogue-email.html?8cir&amp;emc=cira1\">wrote today about the 15,000 apps<\/a> now available in the iPhone app store. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty amazing.<\/p>\n<p>But where&#8217;s the app store for Mac and Windows? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buying apps on-line is not a new concept: \u00a0I&#8217;ve got a handful of &#8220;indie&#8221; apps that I use regularly, and many big-name apps can be now bought on-line. \u00a0But Apple&#8217;s <strong>nailed<\/strong> the user experience for shopping and purchasing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>User reviews.<\/strong> \u00a0Gathered in one spot, on the &#8220;buy&#8221; page, just like Amazon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Streamlined purchase &amp; install flow. <\/strong>\u00a0Enter your iTunes password and you&#8217;re done. \u00a0Compare this to filling out an order form, entering payment info, confirming, downloading, opening the download, starting the install, going through the install wizard, and launching the app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enabling small value purchases. \u00a0<\/strong>Apple has enabled the low-price, high-volume app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The same thing should exist for Mac and Windows. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>User reviews and &#8220;most popular&#8221; would let the best float to the top of the charts. \u00a0A standardized store would supplant the proprietary download\/install modules (e.g. Adobe, EA, Valve\/Steam, etc.). \u00a0The rev share with the store operator (currently 30% for the iPhone) would be lower because it competes with other distribution methods.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s something only Apple and Microsoft can pull off &#8212; it really needs\u00a0ubiquity\u00a0to work. \u00a0(But Apple might be able to do it for\u00a0Windows, if they bundled the app store with QuickTime\/Safari).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Pogue\u00a0wrote today about the 15,000 apps now available in the iPhone app store. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty amazing.
