{"id":141,"date":"2009-01-26T14:00:13","date_gmt":"2009-01-26T18:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2009\/01\/26\/wanted-simple-skype\/"},"modified":"2009-01-26T14:00:13","modified_gmt":"2009-01-26T18:00:13","slug":"wanted-simple-skype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wanted-simple-skype\/","title":{"rendered":"Wanted:  Simple Skype"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love video chat, but I&#8217;m currently stuck with my dad where we can see his video but he can&#8217;t see ours (using Skype).\u00a0 We know it works on our end. \u00a0 My dad can&#8217;t figure out why it doesn&#8217;t work any more, and (debugging remotely) I can&#8217;t figure it out either.<\/p>\n<p>I loved Skype when it first came out:\u00a0\u00a0 it was simple, punched through firewalls reliably, and had great audio quality. \u00a0 Now, I feel like it&#8217;s devolved to the iChat \/ old Net Meeting experiences, where each session begins with 15 minutes of debugging (can&#8217;t connect, no audio\/video, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>I want a video chat client that &#8220;just works&#8221;, and works especially well when one of the participants isn&#8217;t that computer saavy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rock-solid firewall traversal (e.g. no iChat &#8220;communcation errors&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Simple setup and config; eliminate all &#8220;advanced&#8221; options<\/li>\n<li>Remote debug of problems.\u00a0 With permission, let me poke around the other computer&#8217;s chat configuration (e.g which USB device, audio settings, etc.).\u00a0 If soemthing doesn&#8217;t work, give very specific and detailed error messages.\u00a0 Bonus:\u00a0 include screen sharing or at least screen snapshots.<\/li>\n<li>Great echo cancellation (modern PCs have the signal-processing horsepower) so nobody needs <strike>microphones<\/strike> headphones<\/li>\n<li>Dynamic quality settings for video and audio based on bandwidth.<\/li>\n<li>Pre-configuration option: \u00a0 a way for me to configure a link, send to a friend for them to download and install, in a way that it&#8217;s intially configured to chat back to me.<\/li>\n<li>A test call that checks everything (like Skype&#8217;s echo123, but for video too).<\/li>\n<li>Launch and chat.\u00a0 Support for individual desktop icons that initiate a video chat to a specific recipient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m half-tempted to start an open\/collaborative effort to build this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love video chat, but I&#8217;m currently stuck with my dad where we can see his video but he can&#8217;t see ours (using Skype).\u00a0 We know it works on our end. \u00a0 My dad can&#8217;t figure out why it doesn&#8217;t &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wanted-simple-skype\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-141","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ramblings"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/141","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=141"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/141\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=141"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=141"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=141"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
