{"id":136,"date":"2009-01-14T22:34:53","date_gmt":"2009-01-15T02:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2009\/01\/14\/developers-are-now-like-aspiring-novelists\/"},"modified":"2009-01-14T22:34:53","modified_gmt":"2009-01-15T02:34:53","slug":"developers-are-now-like-aspiring-novelists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/developers-are-now-like-aspiring-novelists\/","title":{"rendered":"Developers are now like aspiring novelists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iphonesavior.com\/2009\/01\/iphone-developer-quits-day-job-after-ishoot-hits-number-one.html\">just read a blog post<\/a> about a developer with a #1 iPhone app that quit his day job.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;indie developer&#8221; market seems alive and well (and not just for iPhone apps).\u00a0 If you have talent and an SDK, you can give it a shot.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re lucky, you can make a good living.\u00a0 Software applications have become an expressive art like novels, paintings, music, and screen plays.<\/p>\n<p>The downside is it&#8217;s getting very crowded because there aren&#8217;t barriers: \u00a0 the only capital required is time.\u00a0 There&#8217;s the joke about every waiter in LA being an asipiring actor; I feel like every developer I know is writing an iPhone\/Android app.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a hit app does not make a sustainable business.\u00a0 Very few writers are able to break out and build a sustainable franchise (e.g. Tom Clancy, JK Rowling).<\/p>\n<p>I think the same will be true for indie developers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just read a blog post about a developer with a #1 iPhone app that quit his day job.
