{"id":115,"date":"2008-07-26T10:26:55","date_gmt":"2008-07-26T14:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.payne.org\/2008\/07\/26\/inventing-the-xerox-machine\/"},"modified":"2008-07-26T10:26:55","modified_gmt":"2008-07-26T14:26:55","slug":"inventing-the-xerox-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/payne.org\/blog\/inventing-the-xerox-machine\/","title":{"rendered":"Inventing the Xerox machine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you like technology entrepreneurship stories, you&#8217;ll love <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Copies-Seconds-Communication-Breakthrough-Gutenberg-Chester\/dp\/0743251172\">Copies in Seconds<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Owen_%28author%29\">David Owen<\/a>.\u00a0 I just finished it and almost literally, could not put it down.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chester_Carlson\">Chester Carlson<\/a>, the inventor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photo_copier\">copy machine<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s easy to read, and is full if interesting technology and business details without being boring.\u00a0 The introduction of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xerox_914\">legendary 914 copier<\/a>, and the story of rapid, out-of-control growth (in the early 60s) should sound familiar to any Internet entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s full of hilarious and quirky details, like the time an FTC official complained about over-representing the product&#8217;s capabilities (specficially, the ability to copy onto plain paper) and they responded by sending him back his letter copied onto a brown paper bag.\u00a0 Or how the salesmen would show the copy speed by copying a stopwatch.<\/p>\n<p>Great book, highly recommended.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you like technology entrepreneurship stories, you&#8217;ll love Copies in Seconds by David Owen.\u00a0 I just finished it and almost literally, could not put it down.
